The Raw Truth About Security in Fort Lauderdale

Fort Lauderdale has something no other city in South Florida has at the same scale: the marine industry. More superyachts are based, serviced, brokered, and chartered out of Fort Lauderdale than anywhere else in the Americas. The marinas along the 17th Street Causeway, the New River, Bahia Mar, and the Intracoastal collectively berth billions of dollars in floating assets.

The security requirements for these vessels, and the principals who own them, are unlike any other category of private security. The asset moves. The crew rotates. The operational environment shifts from a Fort Lauderdale marina to open water to a Caribbean port. And the principal’s exposure pattern spans their Palm Beach estate, their Fort Lauderdale yacht, international waters, and a foreign jurisdiction,  all in a single week.

Most security firms in Fort Lauderdale were built for one environment. Residential firms know estates. Corporate firms know lobbies. Marine firms know vessels. Almost nobody connects all three into a single protective posture that follows the principal regardless of whether they’re at home, at the office, on the dock, or at sea.

We’ve assessed situations where a yacht owner had excellent onboard security,  professional captain, vetted crew, locked access. But the land-to-sea transition at the marina,  walking 200 feet from the parking lot to the dock with personal valuables, through an open marina environment, surrounded by other boat owners, contractors, and marine workers,  had zero security coverage. The most vulnerable moment in the principal’s routine happened between two protected environments with nothing connecting them.

That gap is what we close.

The Threat Picture in Fort Lauderdale in 2026

The Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (October 28-November 1, 2026) is the largest in-water boat show in the world. Over 100,000 attendees across seven waterfront locations. More than $1 billion in vessel inventory on display. The security environment during the show week transforms the entire waterfront — concentrated assets, massive foot traffic, after-hours vulnerability at display venues, and the VIP hospitality events that orbit every major show day.

The barrier island communities — Lighthouse Point, Hillsboro Mile, Hillsboro Beach — present estate security challenges comparable to Palm Beach Island. Oceanfront and Intracoastal exposure on both sides. Limited access points. Seasonal vacancy. And a waterway environment where the Intracoastal traffic is heavy enough that a surveillance vessel is indistinguishable from a pleasure boat without active monitoring.

Fort Lauderdale’s finger-island neighborhoods contain properties valued at $5 million to $25 million on canal lots with direct ocean access through the Port Everglades inlet. Road access is limited. Water access is completely open. Every property’s dock is reachable by any vessel on the canal system without encountering a gate, a guard, or a camera.

The yachting industry vets crew primarily through placement agencies. Background checks are often limited to maritime certification verification and basic reference calls. The deeper investigation, financial background, social media, criminal history beyond the hiring jurisdiction, is typically not performed. These crew members live in proximity to the principal and their family, with complete physical access to the vessel’s private spaces.

The Cypress Creek corridor, downtown Fort Lauderdale, and the Broward business market have expanded with financial services, technology, and healthcare operations that need corporate security capabilities the local market wasn’t built to provide.

The Founder’s Standard

John Hamilton built HKDS to provide protection that follows principals wherever they operate. Fort Lauderdale’s marine industry creates a protection environment where the asset, the principal, and the threat can all be in motion simultaneously. The firms that only protect people on land are missing the majority of where Fort Lauderdale’s wealth actually exists.
