The Raw Truth About Security in Miami

Miami is not Palm Beach with nightclubs. It’s a fundamentally different protection environment that requires a fundamentally different approach.

Palm Beach is controlled environments, private clubs, and a relatively homogeneous wealthy population. Miami is international capital flows, Latin American political exposure, entertainment industry visibility, high-density urban environments, and a threat landscape that spans domestic crime, international organized activity, and the cross-border dynamics that come with being the financial capital of Latin America.

The executive protection firms that serve both markets and treat them as interchangeable are failing their Miami clients.

We’ve assessed situations in Brickell where a wealth management firm handling $500 million in client assets had building-level lobby security provided by a national guard company, zero tenant-level access control to their own suite, no visitor management system beyond a paper sign-in sheet, and an executive whose personal home address was findable through three different data broker sites within five minutes of searching.

The lobby guard knew who was authorized to enter the building. Nobody knew who was authorized to enter the firm’s specific office. And the executive’s most sensitive meeting — a dispute mediation with a former partner — was scheduled in a conference room visible through floor-to-ceiling glass from the building lobby.

That’s not a security program. That’s a uniform in a chair.

The Threat Picture in Miami in 2026

A significant percentage of EP clients in Miami have international exposure that doesn’t exist in Palm Beach. Latin American industrialists with political adversaries in their home countries. Venezuelan and Colombian families who relocated with wealth that attracts attention from criminal organizations and government entities. Brazilian investors navigating currency and regulatory risk. Gulf state families with Miami residential holdings. The threat assessment for these principals must account for country-specific risk factors that domestic EP firms don’t evaluate.

The December 2024 murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson outside a Manhattan hotel changed executive protection demand across every major market, including Miami. Corporate boards that previously viewed EP as discretionary began treating it as a governance obligation. The demand surge strained the Miami EP market — firms that were adequately staffed in 2023 stretched personnel across more engagements than they can properly service.

In July 2024, Hard Rock Stadium hosted the Copa America final. A surge of fans without tickets overwhelmed the perimeter. Gates were breached. Fans were trampled. People were bloodied. Security lost control. Miami is now hosting 7 FIFA World Cup matches at the same venue in June-July 2026 — Brazil, Portugal, Colombia, Uruguay, a quarterfinal, and the bronze final. The security implications for VIP attendees are significant.

In December 2026, Miami hosts the G20 Summit at Trump National Doral. World leaders from the planet’s largest economies. Massive security footprint. The implications for residential and corporate security across all of South Florida will be substantial.

Fisher Island (ferry-access), Indian Creek (private police force), Star Island (guard gate) — each provides community-level security. None provides estate-level protection from threats that originate inside the gate: household staff, contractors, authorized visitors. The insider risk dimension is the gap that community policing doesn’t address.

Brickell, Wynwood, the Design District, South Beach — high-density, high-visibility environments where principals are surrounded by unscreened pedestrians, where paparazzi and social media documentation are constant, and where building-to-vehicle transitions happen on public sidewalks.

The Founder’s Standard

John Hamilton built HKDS because the civilian security market was not meeting the standard that the threat environment demands. Miami’s international complexity, urban density, and the convergence of domestic and cross-border threats make it one of the most challenging protection environments in the United States. The firms treating Miami like a domestic market with an accent are missing everything that makes it different.
